Love is Love.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in the United States since June 26, 2015. At Sunnyslope Church we’ve been celebrating marriage for everyone from the moment it was legal in Washington state on December 6, 2012. Before that we held commitment ceremonies for couples having on through pre-marriage counseling.
The decision wasn’t made lightly.
After almost two years of intentional conversation and study, on Sunday 9/23/12 following worship, we held a Special Congregational Meeting. The sole reason for the meeting was to vote on accepting two new statements regarding our “official and public” declaration as an Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation. The vote, that needed a two-thirds majority to pass, did pass.
It is my sense that some of those who voted against the changes felt that the old statements we have been using for a number of years are adequate. And a few others may still feel that many years of personal Biblical belief are just too hard to change. I want you to know that the Welcoming Team and Leadership Team have heard your concerns and will keep them in mind as we move forward. We realize that as a congregation and church family we are not of one mind on this and other issues. But we also know that we do agree on God’s unending love. So, we pray that we will continue to set an example to our neighbors and the world in regard to living together as a community of faith and respecting each other in our diversity of faith journeys.
Being bold with our public statements may lead to some changes, both in how we are viewed by the community, and how we are challenged personally in our witness. Change is not comfortable for many of us. But as I said in our meeting, being a “Living Peace Church” requires us to continue to act on our faith rather than rest on the laurels of our past. Glad you are on the journey with us. Congratulations on your bravery and bold faith! – Ken Neher, your moderator.
